Isabelle Valera

isabelle valera

Festival Director, Graphic Designer & Improv Instructor

Creative Director of Valera Graphic Design by day, Isabelle lives and breathes improv theatre by night. She has performed improv theatre across different countries and languages, believing that improv is a powerful philosophy where emotional connection brings better understanding and kindness among people.

Isabelle is originally from France, specifically from Lyon, which was the capital of improv theatre before the practice exploded in Europe. Improvisation entered her life in an unremarkable way: a friend/performer at the LILY (Ligue d’Improvisation Lyonnaise), invited her to join a class in 2001. That class ignited a spark. Isabelle was hooked.

Isabelle graduated from the French School of Arts, ESAD, Isabelle is primarily a visual artist and a muralist painter. She believes her studies support her daily improv: Image, storytelling, material, space... Everything is related and connected!

In the last 20 years, she has trained extensively. She learned from incredible mentors like Alexandre Chetail, Julie Doyelle, Florian Langlais, Matthieu Loos, Phillipe Muyard (Amadeus Rocket), Zobert Houmeur (Kamelyon Impro) in France. She has participated in workshops with Odile Cantero, Hila Di Castro, Andel Sudik, Jim Libby, and Jacob Bannigan among others. Whenever she travels, she tries to book a course.

She became an active member of multiple teams, including Royal Gambas, ImproFusion, Collectif d’Impro…(FR), Hoi Polloi, Don’t Touch My Mushroom, What Is Normal, and The XxX’s (with this project created and directed by Lola Maggi, she's challenging herself to explore intimacy and vulnerability).

In June 2024, embracing the art of improvisation, she proudly held the title of Festival Director for the first ever English speaking Improvisation Festival in Zurich, under the visionary guidance of Tara Brodin, Artistic Director at Close Encounters Theatre.

Today, she has the privilege and immense joy of sharing her knowledge with CET's students. She’s also part of CET’s ensemble DIVA Therapy.

For over 20 years, improvisation has continued to nurture Isabelle in all her artistic ventures!
