Dramaturg
Dr Clio Unger is a German dramaturg, researcher and lecturer living in London, UK. An award-winning researcher, Clio holds a PhD in theatre and performance studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London and currently works as a post-doctorate researcher in a project funded by the European Research Council.
Clio has worked as a dramaturg in Munich, Berlin, New York City, and London and is passionate about making theatre. She is an enthusiastic collaborator, who has worked with directors, writers, and choreographers. Aside from more classical play dramaturgy, Clio also has an interest in developing new works – of drama, dance, or devised performance. Applying her keen eye and experience, she has worked on theatrical adaptations of novels, consulted on new play developments, and shaped pieces of contemporary dance and performance art.
In addition to making theatre, Clio also loves teaching theatre and performance. Her pedagogy is informed by her own dramaturgical training, which combines theory and practice and encourages practical exploration as well as theoretical discussion. She offers a rich experience of any texts engaged in class by modelling collective analytical practices and discussing the cultural embeddedness of a given text. This way she grounds the students' intellectual approach to the ‘big ideas' in their lived, first-hand knowledge, and individual interests and talents, combining abstract thinking with embodied experience.
Clio studied dramaturgy at the Ludwig-Maximillian University and the Bavarian Theatre Academy in Munich, Germany, holds and MA in theatre and performance studies from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, USA, and has completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at the University of London. Furthermore, she has a rich background in intercultural exchange, having studied in Canada, the US, the UK, and Germany, and travelled extensively to see theatre all over the world.
Clio loves theatre in all its forms and is excited to share this excitement with the CET community. Let’s make inspiring, thought-provoking, and powerful performances!
